John & Katie // Smith Rock State Park Proposal
I shared this story on Instagram the day the proposal went down, buuuut I wanted to share it here as well because it’s just SO GOOD. Smith Rock was literally the perfect spot for this surprise proposal, and I’m still on a high from it!
Men, if you’re planning to propose, find yo self a photographer (insert shameless plug for myself here). Your soon-to-be fiancee will be really happy with you.

John first slid into my DMs 5 days ago. “I’m trying to propose to my girlfriend and have someone get some good pictures of it. Is that something you would be willing to do?” My heart literally jumped when I read those words, and I couldn’t type “OH MY GOSH YES” fast enough. We traded a few messages back-and-forth, before deciding the proposal would go down at Smith Rock just outside of Bend.
I rolled out of bed before it was even light outside this morning (which isn’t that hard to do since it’s the dead of winter) and started the drive across the mountains. For the first hour and a half of that drive, rain and wind pounded my Jeep. And with each time my wipers swept across my windshield, I felt my anxiety rise. But the closer I got to Smith Rock, the clearer the skies became…and ole Mr Sunshine even started to peak his head out!!
Fast forward through nightmare-ish parking, not recognizing the spot that John and I had decided the proposal would go down, finally find the *perfect* spot, realizing that another proposal was happening in that same spot shortly after John + Katie’s, and the time finally came.
I did my level best to act like a tourist enthralled with the beauty of Smith Rock, and hoped my body language didn’t somehow scream “photographer about to capture a proposal” as John + Katie walked right past me and down a little path to that perfect patch of dirt. (And thankfully Katie didn’t glance back up the hill toward me, because I definitely resembled the paparazzi.)
So, with the freaking stunning Smith Rock as a backdrop, John got down on one knee and asked the love of his life to marry him.
(Spoiler alert: Katie said “YES!”)
John + Katie, I’m so dang glad I was able to be a part of today!! You guys seem so down to earth and awesome, and legitimately perfect together. I’m so excited to follow along and see where life takes you and all the adventures you go on! Congratulations again!!
